Kalshi is often considered the leading P2P prediction exchange and it boasts some of the largest trade volume and liquidity for the immense range of prediction markets that it offers on real-world events.
But, how does Kalshi work? If you’ve been looking at starting here, we’ve created a complete introductory guide below. Read on as we explain how the peer-2-peer trading setup works at Kalshi, and what you can do with the trade contracts you buy. We’ll also discuss examples of the types of predictions you can trade here.
How does Kalshi work? A detailed introduction
Kalshi is a peer-2-peer prediction exchange where customers from around the world can buy and sell trade contracts relating to real-world predictions. These predictions cover a multitude of different events including national elections, the price of crypto, sports events, and the price of commodities.
Trade contracts at Kalshi
Trade contracts are the underlying foundation of Kalshi. Each prediction they have will also have a series of trade contracts. For example:
“Will the US confirm that aliens exist before 2027?”
- Yes - 8.6c.
- No - 91.8c.
This is an example of an actual prediction at Kalshi and you have three main components - the prediction itself, and a yes and no option with a relevant price. The yes and no options are the trade contracts and these are what you can trade with other people. There’s nothing like Kalshi odds - the trade contract price simply changes based on trader sentiment and the implied probability of the event happening or not.
So, in this example, you would be able to buy “No” trade contracts for $0.918 each. Because the default value of a trade contract is $1, we can see here that the “no” option is being touted as the likely outcome, and it essentially has an implied probability of 91.80%. Please remember though that implied probability is not a guarantee - the public can get predictions wrong.
Buying and selling trade contracts
When you’ve signed up to Kalshi using our banners, you have the option of buying trade contracts for predictions. If the trade contract price then shifts in your favor, you could also consider selling them to try and make a return. You must be aware of the Kalshi trading fees though, as buying and selling typically has an associated fee for each action which can reduce your potential profit.
Settling trade contracts
Alternatively, you also have the option of trying to settle your trade contracts. This means you buy some trade contracts for a prediction, and then hold them until the event happens. At this point, one of two things can occur:
- You settle in-the-money: if this happens, you got the prediction right, and you’ll get a $1 return for each settled trade contract.
- You settle out-of-the-money: in this instance, you got the prediction wrong and when this happens you get a $0 return on your trade contracts.

Pros and cons of Kalshi
We rate Kalshi as one of the top prediction exchanges. It has the benefit of having one of the largest customer bases, and thus offers superb trade volume and liquidity for most of its markets. Additionally, it has a huge selection of prediction markets, covering everything from sports and science to politics and crypto.
From a usability perspective the site and mobile apps work great too, and it also has a variable trading fee structure that isn’t too detrimental to your overall returns. The only real area where Kalshi falls short a little is its lack of promotions or bonuses for both new and existing customers.
- The largest current trade volume
- Excellent liquidity
- Two mobile apps
- Diverse prediction market collection
- Not many promotions
