Polymarket Odds 2026: How Accurate are the Market Predictions?

Positive Aspects
  • Regulated DCM
  • Encrypted banking platform
  • Dedicated mobile apps
Negative Aspects
  • Prohibited in some regions

Polymarket is a prediction market site that lets you trade Yes or No event contracts tied to real-world outcomes. Each contract has a price that reflects its probability of occurring., which is why you’re not going to find any Polymarket odds.

In this guide, we’ll clarify how Polymarket’s contract prices and probabilities work and how accurate they are. To start with, prediction market sites do not use traditional odds formats. Polymarket doesn’t directly determine the prices, and they’re entirely based on real-time market conditions. Continue reading to learn more.

How probabilities on Polymarket work

There are no odds on Polymarket. The numbers you see attached for each market refer to event contract prices, which are also probabilities. They’re completely different from the regular decimal, fractional, or American odds on online sportsbooks. Instead, the numbers here simply represent the market’s current estimate of an event’s likelihood.

Let’s take a careful look at the different factors involved:

Event contract pricing

On the Polymarket app or website, traders set the odds since the prediction market is peer-to-peer (P2P). If you want to purchase an event contract, there must be someone on the other end available to sell.

Event contract prices range from 0.01 to 0.99 and vary with supply and demand. Polymarket displays a market-implied probability chart, so you can see how the rates vary over different periods. Typically, the price will increase if more traders are buying and decrease if many are selling.

How prices reflect probabilities

Here’s an example of an NFL event we found in our Polymarket review:

Contract/EventPanthers to win against the Cardinals
Yes0.59
No0.42

The above prices indicate that the Panthers have approximately a 59% probability of winning and a 42% chance of losing. Together, the prices add up to 1.01, which corresponds to a 101% total probability. The additional 0.01, or 1%, is due to the difference between the bid and ask prices, known as the spread.

Polymarket payouts

When you trade on Polymarket, every winning contract pays 1. From our earlier example, consider buying 100 Yes contracts for the Panthers to win. That’ll cost you 59 (0.59 x 100). If the team eventually wins, you’ll receive a 100 payout, making a 41 profit before fees.

The payout pattern is another way in which Polymarket’s odds differ from those of online sportsbooks. At online sportsbooks, the payout comes directly from the quoted odds, while Polymarket’s is fixed at 1 regardless of the initial price.

Understanding Polymarket live probabilities

When an event is ongoing, you’ll see its real-time probabilities on Polymarket. As in the pre-event period, the contract price is still based on market supply and demand dynamics.

However, the difference is that the prices are much more volatile. Since the event is happening in real time, traders react quickly as new information becomes available.

We tested live trading in our review after depositing Bitcoin on Polymarket for an NBA game between the NY Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs had a 48% chance to win (0.48 for Yes) just before the start of the game. However, they led 33-22 after the first quarter, and their probabilities rose to 61%.

If you’re trading live on Polymarket, you can sell contracts before settlement and profit early if the price increases. Conversely, if the price decreases, you can still sell to minimize losses.

How do Polymarket probabilities work in the US?

In the US, Polymarket probabilities work the same way they do in other countries where the prediction market operates. They are basically event contract prices, and they fluctuate based on available information and the overall market sentiment. If you're wondering if the market is legal in the US, the answer is yes, as the brand is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Are Polymarket probabilities accurate?

The consensus is that Polymarket probabilities can be accurate. However, the event probabilities don’t guarantee any outcome.

As we’ve explained, contract prices on Polymarket reflect traders' collective estimate of an event. Polymarket doesn’t assign the rates directly. Therefore, if an outcome on the platform has a high probability, it means actual people believe it will happen.

Factors that affect accuracy

In our experience, liquidity is one of the main factors that determines accuracy. Popular prediction markets with many traders tend to be more accurate than niche ones with minimal orders. To identify liquid markets, you should check the order book depth on Polymarket.

Time-to-resolution also matters, as observed from our firsthand Polymarket probability tracking. Prices often become more accurate as an event approaches because traders have more information to use.

However, unexpected events, such as sports injuries or breaking political news, can still quickly change the probabilities. In Polymarket crypto prediction markets, the risk is higher because digital currencies are inherently volatile.

For these reasons, we advise treating Polymarket’s probabilities as estimates and not certainties. Even an event trading at 0.90 per contract (90% chance) may still not happen.

Upsides and downsides of Polymarket probabilities

After analyzing Polymarket’s probabilities, these are the pros and cons we want you to know:

Positive Aspects
  • Prices set by the market
  • Multiple formats for display
  • Updates in real time
Negative Aspects
  • Often affected by spreads

Conclusion – Trade with market-estimated probabilities on Polymarket

Polymarket doesn’t feature odds in the same way as traditional online sportsbooks. Instead, the prediction market platform works with event contract prices and probabilities that traders determine as they buy and sell.

Based on our expertise, you should only use Polymarket’s probabilities as a signal of what the market believes will happen. They’re not a guarantee of any outcome. Always trade responsibly, and do your own research to confirm whether other traders are picking the right position.

Polymarket probabilities FAQs

⁉️ How does Polymarket calculate probabilities?

Polymarket doesn’t directly make its odds. Instead, the contract prices and probabilities are determined by prediction market traders in a supply-and-demand situation. Probabilities will increase if more people are buying and decrease if more are selling.

How reliable are Polymarket probabilities?

Polymarket’s price odds can be reliable because they show the collective estimate of an event’s probability. However, there’s no guarantee that any prediction will happen.

Does Polymarket have fair probabilities?

Polymarket is considered to have fair probabilities because those odds are simply event contract prices. They’re set by the market without any built-in margins, although there may be a spread.
